Saweetie began posting brief raps to her Instagram account in 2016. In one video, she rapped over Khia’s “My Neck, My Back (Lick It)” beat, which would later become “Icy Grl.” She posted the song on SoundCloud in the summer of 2017, and it attracted the ear of Max Gousse, a well-known producer and A&R executive who became her manager.
